Dubrovnik, Croatia was a complete unknown to me before I got there. For the other stops on that cruise I had read, studied, learned about the place we were going to visit. But Dubrovnik was different; it was a mystery to me. But as soon as I walked into the old city I fell in love with the place. I walked along the walls of the old city, explored side streets, visited little cafes, drank beer, ate wonderful food, sat and looked at the sea and the castle-like buildings that rose on the rocks at the edge of the sea. I didn’t get to see much besides the old city and the new city between the cruise ship port and the old city, but what I saw I liked. If the Croatians were not so horribly homophobic and viciously anti-gay, I would gladly go back and visit and explore some more. But until they can get their bigotry under control they will not get any of my tourist dollars. As soon as they do, I’ll be back in a heartbeat.
