Every time I drive through this area I keep thinking I should take the time and visit Shanksville. I never have until my trip in mid-June of 2012. It was a big detour, but I am so glad I went.
It was truly a gut wrenching experience, but the Park Service has done a beautiful job of blending the tragedy with the beauty of the area. It is impossible to describe the emotions that you feel as you stand there and look at the actual point of impact, where the brave heroes of United Flight 93 fought back and successfully stopped the terrorists from striking a fourth target on the morning of September 11, 2001. Those folks are indeed heroes in my book.
The Memorial is beautiful and will become much more elaborate over the years ahead as more construction is completed. A visitor center is planned which will be a tremendous addition to the Memorial. Yes, it is in the middle of absolutely nowhere, but if you ever find yourself anywhere near, do yourself a favor and go check this place out.
